Girls Bedroom Makeover

After living with the same decor for a couple of years, it was time to give my girl’s bedroom a makeover!

When we finished building our home, my daughter had just turned four. To help her with the adjustment, I wanted her to pick out the paint color for her new bedroom. At the time, I hoped that she could be influenced into a color that would make it easy to integrate some of the things we already owned from the previous house, so I gently nudged her toward a super pale pastel. Being my daughter – an only child, stubborn, strong-willed, independent – she chose just exactly what her heart desired. So, her bedroom since the very beginning has been a shade of mint.

Fast forward almost four years and she’s still chillin’ in her minty bedroom. We’ve lived through the challenge that was 2020 and spent a lot of time at home due to social distancing and virtual learning. So one day, she approached me and asked if she could have a “big girl” bedroom.

When I hear a faint invitation to give something a makeover I basically turn into a wild animal. I started sketching things that I thought she would love. I invited her into my world of madness and equipped her with colored pencils and unicorn stickers. While letting her imagination run, I was also keeping the less desirable attributes of her room in mind. It is at the back of the house, and the wall with her dresser is one you can see while you’re coming down the hall. The overall size is pretty small. It comes in at a whopping 10×11. I definitely wanted a lighter palette that would make it look a little bigger.

Just two days after she mentioned the possibility of redoing her bedroom, I sent her off to school and started the priming and painting. My intention was to paint everything white and put wallpaper on two of her walls. I have other plans for her closet swirling around in my head, but I haven’t made up my mind about it yet. For now, that wall is just going to be white.

After I had everything painted, I hung the wallpaper. I know, I’ve heard, “shiplap is going out of style.” I don’t even care. I’ve never done any shiplap. I also thrive in the camp of humans that believes this is my house and we’ll live in it how we want to. I highly encourage you to do the same!

It took me a couple of hours to do the wallpaper. I used peel and stick, which I am so thankful for the invention of. Lining up and leveling the lines of shiplap along an 11-foot long run made me almost as crazy as… well I don’t know. I haven’t felt that crazy in a while. Just know, it was super frustrating.

Once it was done, however, it was oh so satisfying. All of the heart eyes happened when she walked in!

I am head over heels for that floral wallpaper! I have some new bedding ordered and I also promised her a some sort of desk. She loves to write stories!

Behind her door, I’ve put shelves up for all of the little things she’s collected or created. The shelves don’t interfere with the door and all of her little knick-knacks stay mostly hidden. That feels like a win-win for mom!

I’m happy with how everything turned out and she is over the moon with her new “big girl” room!
